Remnants of lead mining start to appear, and the west hillside is covered with flowers in the spring

At the hushes there are extensive (dangerous- keep out) mine workings

The path eventually reaches the stream at a small waterfall (no bridge) cross here and return by the track on the west bank, dropping down before the lime kiln to cross blind gill just below mine workings


walk-holiday-hawes-june-05-060.jpg  Follow the track west (don't take the north branch). As the track starts to drop down into east Grain keep a sharp look out for the path that leaves the track here to follow the north side of the valley down. We followed the good path down past Crackpot Ha

The path up from here is well worn, and comes out on a track just above the lead mines

At Birk Hill we branched left to walk down the valley bottom on smooth grassey paths,
