IBS and Hay Diet: from Irene Tremble on 2009-07-06

Hi there, I have been diagnosed with IBS. I have attended hospital, and gone through various tests including food intolerance tests but with no success.

My symptons are that my stomach swells until it is brick hard and I am often mistaken for being pregnant because of the shape I am (the swelling starts from under my breasts). I am slim everywhere else on my body except my stomach, and the only form of relief is to lie down and rest. From waking in the morning my tummy is quite flat, but as soon as I eat breakfast my tummy starts to swell. By night I may have expanded 2- 4" and feel very uncomfortable and always very gassy. I know I need to lose some weight but just cannot get myself motivated to try yet another eating plan and I know I need to excercise but I am tired, uncomfortable and lethargic most of the time. I am 5' 2" and weigh just under 11 stone at the moment.

My consultant has basically told me there is nothing that can be done but live with it!!! I am at the end of my tether and don't know where to turn next for help as the doctors just say 'oh well it's IBS not a lot we can do'! My friend has pointed me in the direction of the Hay Diet, and I would like to know if you think the diet would help my condition.

i would appreciate your advice.

Since the response of your body to food seems to be quite immediate, it would be worth trying a little experiment.
When you wake up in the morning start with just plain water to drink.
After being up and about for about an hour check that your stomach hasn't swelled up.
Next eat just one banana - and a drink of plain water.
Nothing more for another hour. Has your stomach swelled at all?
Now eat one apple and another drink of plain water. Check yourself again after an hour.
Now one more item of fruit, nothing else except for the water to drink.
No snacks, no sweets, just fruit and water for the day.
How far do you get through the day before your stomach starts to swell
