Hidcote Garden

Hidcote is more a garden that illustrates ideas in the structure of a garden rather than a plantsman's garden, but it does have a lot of interest for both, even on a wet spring day

...

Cherry blossom, early azaleas.

...

...

Trillium spp

...

...

Bergenia

...

The long vista nearest the house is broad and open

...

But the narrowing vista, although it emphasises its length sems a little too enclosed to my eye. I think it would have looked better earlier in its life when it wasn't as tall

...

...

A good display of tulips

...

The topiary adds structural interest, but again it seems too large and dominating now.

...

The bathing pond now makes an excellent mirror pool, and the magnolia looks superb against the dark yew backdrop

...

...

...

This cherry has a particularly nice shape in the less formal woodland area

...

The informal woodland contrasts starkly with this grassy vista

...

Again the topiarty seems to have outgrown its border

...

...

Gentians doing well on the rock garden

...

A very attractive pasque flower on the edge of the rock garden

...

Clever, but a little surreal

...

...

...

I found this avenue of trees on the edge of the garden much more pleasing, with its openness and the delicate tracery of new leaves

...

By contrast the tall columns of dark trees in the long herbaceous border look too solid and stark
