wonder if you've been diagnosed yet. I haven't but 5 more days to D day. I put myself on a gluten free diet 10 days ago and the difference was instant. really not looking forward to eating it again ready for the gastroscopy. apparently the only positive way to diagnose is having a look with a camera. The blood tests can show pointing to the possibility and can sometimes eliminate the possibility but the only sure way is the gastroscopy. providing you haven't stopped the glute already, it will show up.
I actually went to the docs 3 months ago after a shoulder injury. he asked for a routine blood test, then the roller coaster started. found severe iron deficiency anaemia. and an antibody that pointed towards coeliac. no bowel, bloated stomach symptoms then at all. then B12 level was way down so pernicious anaemia diagnosed and b12 injections started. then he said another blood test showed inconclusive for coeliac so started on tablets for my shoulder (he seemed to have forgotten about that) and ordered gastroscopy. as soon as i started the anti inflammatories for my shoulder, I got the bloated stomach, very painful stomach cramps, wind-not something I've ever suffered with and didn't realise just how embarrassing that could be!!! So we had a weeks experiment of gluten free. Brilliant. My only consolation is that I'm going to start my gluten eating habits on Thursday with a few halves of Guinness.
so, if you're LUCKY, you could have some symptoms. If not, it is quite common for it to be picked up on when going to the docs for something totally unrelated- I feel like he's talked me into it. I reckon, whatever the camera shows, I'm going to try and eliminate obvious gluten anyway, maybe with the odd bit sneaking in without me knowing

Have been on gluten free diet for past year znd it has helped a great deal, would like to know if buckwheat contains gluten. thanks for any info you can give me

Buckwheat is the seed of a rhubarb like plant and is gluten-free. It is used to make dishes like Kasha.
In can be a little indigestible in more than small quantities.

My understanding is that there is a difference between wheat intolerance and coeliac disease. You can become intolerant to all kinds of foods, including wheat but the mechanism is different to coeliac disease. So you can have both. I am not an expert but have recently been diagnosed with coeliac (blood test only so far). Having been diagnosed with IBS for many years, I finally got some food intolerance blood tests done (privately) and found I was intolerant to most of what I ate. It was that which put me onto coeliac because apparently it can cause permeability of the intestine and that in turn leads to food intolerances. Going gluten free has not had a magic effect for me and I think it's because I'm still intolerant to a wide range of foods, including wheat. So I won't eat anything with wheat in it even if it's gluten free. This whole area seems a bit uncertain though and my GP doesn't seem to know much about it. A good book for food intolerances (with a very small section on coeliac) is The Complete Guide to Food Allergy and Intolerance ~Jonathan Brostoff, Linda Gamlin

You just have to change your staple carbohydrate. Rice, corn, potatoes are OK. I eat rice cakes instead of bread - and that's not a problem because I'd gone off bread anyway - it used to make me feel rough. You can get breakfast cereals based on rice (not rice crispies because they have malt extract in them) and corn. There are other more exotic cereals (quinoa and amarinth) but I haven't tried them. I've found living without wheat only becomes a problem when you go out somewhere when you realise that the world (this part of it anyway) is dominated by sandwiches, cakes and biscuits

i am also doing my GCSE coursework on coeliacs and was wondering if anyone could help me anseer my questions.
*do you find it hoard to eat a balanced diet? what problems do you face?
*do you find food much more expensive than "normal" foods?
*wat problems do you face when going out to eat socailly?
*do you find gluten free products hard to cook with and how do you find the taste?

No it hasn't apparently it's made from the seeds of a member of the rhubarb family - and it's popular in Russia.
