I have had UC since 2003, I have been wheat free since December and was symptom free after just 24-48 hours and have had my meds reduced from around 25 tablets to 9 and hopefully this will reduce further in 4 months, but I had real trouble convincing my consoltant that there was a link between my diet and a 3 month long flair up! is this a normal attitude by the NHS? I would love to hear from anyone with any info!

I have had Ulcerative Colitis for 6 years now, and was recently so frustrated I just stopped eating all solid foods for a week. I simply drank high quality soup broth at meal time. It was really hard but paid off. My simptoms literally disappeared after 3 days. Obviously I couldn't keep that up forever, so I introduced white rice bread, and rice cheese and have had no symptoms for another week. I'm hoping to try steamed rice soon. Taking a multi-vitamin and some herbal remedies may be helping as well. Hope!

You are not the only one with this experience.
My symptoms were so bad they decided on an internal investigation. Put me on water only for three days before hand. By the time they were ready for the anaesthetic all the symptoms had gone and I hadn't felt as fit for years and years!
The hard bit was then working out what actually caused the symptoms. It got labelled as Coeliac, but I was convinced it wasn't quite the whole story. Any finely powdered food could trigger the symptoms again. e.g.Whole rice is OK, but fine rice flour is not. I stick to a gluten-free diet, but without any sort of flour, so fruit, veg, meat, fish and I stay completely free of symptoms.

hi, Could sore eyes be a symptom of gluten intolerance. Ive had an eye exam, and it was fine. For the past few months ive experienced headaches, motion sickness feelings, sinus problems. I truly suspect diet is the culprit, but don't know where to begin. Do I remove dairy, gluten, caffine????? Can you suggest a plan? Thanks Dianne

One first step could be to keep a detailed diary of everything that you eat - and any symptoms that you are aware of every day.
You may find that there is a pattern that relates some of your symptoms to the foods that you eat.
This is easier if you cook your own food and keep your diet fairly simple as many manufactured foods are mixtures of a lot of different things

have been reading your stories with great interest. I was diagnosed with UC a year ago, at 23, and have been pretty much off work since. I can't seem to be able to sustain remission without prednisalone or predfoam, which is kind of painful at times. Am a the end of my tether, my next stop is surgery, although am keen to avoid it! Have tried a jucing and whole fruits diet by David Klein, but lack of willpower sunk it within a week. Was starting to feel better though, just very hungry! Am now going to attempt wheat and dairy free. I realise I should probably run this by my GP and gastroenterologist, but they just seem so resistant to anything other than pill pushing. Any advice? The cramping pains are the worst!!

That you start to feel better when you have cut many items out of your diet does suggest that it may be certain foods that are the cause of your problem.
Stick to fresh and plain foods when you try gluten and dairy free diet. Don't eat manufactured foods. Go for freshly cooked potato or rice, fresh meat or fish, olive oil, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables. No sauces. Don't deviate. Hold your resolve

Thank you, I will definitely try my hardest this time, I hate being stuck in during the summer! I am starting to feel a bit better again, after cutting most of my wheat and gluten, and only indulging in a little goats cheese. I'll let you know how I get on.
