Yes, you may be right about the oats. Unless the grower and manufacturer of the product test the oats for gluten they may be contaminated by other gluten crops grown in the same fields or near by or in the processing plant. Although oats are not considered a gluten containing food, some people still cannot tolerate them even if the product has been proven gluten free by testing. If you are using oats that have been tested and are gluten free, then I would suggest your daughter cannot tolerate oats. I am gluten intolerant and use a product from the US, Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods. They have gluten free hot cereal called Mighty Tasty GF Hot Cereal and they also have GF Oats. I hope this helps

Sorry to hear of your FM condition. I believe that I also have it but am awaiting a formal diagnosis. I had suffered 8 months of chronic diarrhoea when a colonoscopy indicated collagenous colitis. The only thing that has stopped the symptom is drastically reducing my fructose intake unless is it matched by the same amount of fructose. I make mistakes and will continue to do so until I am diagnosed and get professional dietary advice. You have to take care about the possible vitamin and nutrient deficiency because so many fruits and vegetables are off limits and there is also the issue of calcium in relation to bone density I believe. Unlike the gluten and lactos sufferers in our case we get nothing from food labels because there is no indication of the fructose and glucose amounts in the sugars indicated.

I am eating more eggs and cheese than before which is not good for my cholesterol, so here again I need professional help. The expert in this matter seems to be Dr and Professor Peter Gibson at Box Hill Hospital in Monash, Australia. There are two great articles on the topic that I can email you about if there is some way of us being in touch (I can see no provision for that on this website) including lists of foods that are on- and off-limits although you have to establish your tolerance levels by trial and error I think. There is a gastroenterologist expert in the special diet referred to in the articles (he must have worked with Dr Gibson) who is going to introduce it to the UK (it is currently in wide use in Australian and in use in parts of New Zealand). I can also let you know more about this

In my first paragraph, third sentence, I meant to say that the fructose has to be balanced by an equal amount of glucose to be ok, but even then you must not have to much of it. Oranges and grapefruits are ok because they are in fructose/glucose balance, for example

I was told by a nutritionist that carmel coloring is o.k. as long as it was produced in the U.S. Unfortunatley you have to contact the manufacturer for each product.

Hi, I am a 25 yr old female with Ulcerative Colitis. I have been flaring for the past half a year but only over the past 6 weeks have started to get it under control after being hospitilized. I am on medications such as 6-MP (an auto immune suppressant Drug), Asacol, Prednisone, Cortisone and other enemas. It seems as though my flaring has ceased. I don't know if it's the meds or the foods that I eat which are causing these horrible symptoms. Doctors are telling me not to eat dairy, now they say no gluten...and a whole other list of no-no's. What then, is there left to eat

I have now been on a gluten-free dairy-free diet for 28 years. I buy fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, with potato and rice as the main carbohydrate.

I also get out and get plenty of exercise, and have stayed fit and healthy.

I read your e-mail about the gluten free breads not tasting like the breads you were used to. I am on a gluten free diet and have been for many years. I know what you mean about the difference in the taste. The best bread that I have found is Sami's bakery millet and flax seed bread. They also make wraps, hamburger buns, hot dog buns, and pizza crust. Hopefully that will help if you have not already tried it yet.

Sounds like your cortisol excretion is out of whack!

I had the same problem. Going off gluten helped a lot but I still had the sleeping problems, due to weakened adrenals (which happened because my body was fighting the gluten). Try googling for "adrenal fatique", this should help you

For finger foods, Rice Chex has gone gluten free and my 8-month-old son loves them, as well as plain and apple cinnamon rice cakes, but don't get the mini ones. There is a lot of other stuff in them. He is intolerant of oats and wheat
