Malaysia and Singapore - Help: from on 2001-10-31
Does anybody have experience of visiting these countries as a coeliac? For instance, do you know if they prepare soy sauce with wheat? Are there any tips on what you can eat and what to avoid?
Any help gratefully received.

HTML>I didn't have any problems in Singapore - but don't eat in the expensive restaurants round the harbour. Go and eat where the locals eat in the chinese area. They have whole floors in the skyscraper blocks that are all small food booths. All stainless steel and spotlessly clean. Tables and chairs are common to the stalls. Order a bit of a meal from one stall and somthing else from the next. Prices are fraction of the cost and the range and quality is excellent.

The soya sauce over here have wheat as a hidden component. Most ingredients on the products are not as explicit as those in the West.
I suffer from an after meal cough for the last 40 years.
It was only last year that I realise that I am allergic to gluten although, some experts have replied that they have yet come across persistent irritating cough as symptons of the allergy.
MSG which contains traces of gluten is widely used in Asia cooking to enhance the smell and taste.

I am going to Singapore at the end of the month. If anyone has any more information I would be very interested. The conference organizers are concerned about the banquet which will be at a local Chinese restaurant. Any feedback about specific foods that are OK or that I can not have would be great.

I'm also trying to find gluten free restaurants/cafes in Singapore for a friend who has to travel there for work this year.
I can tell you that soy sauce DOES HAVE WHEAT/GLUTEN in it. The alternative product is called: TAMARI SAUCE and we have been able to find it in our local supermarkets here in Australia.
Try googling Coeliac Society of Australia - they have a booklet they produce which has every food you can & can't eat listed in it - you can buy this booklet...or get in touch/become a member with/to a similar society in your country.

I will soon be moving to Singapore and would like to know if GF flour/bread/pasta etc is readily available there. I have coeliac disease and I am very sensitive to any gluten. Does anyone have any experience of living there with coeliac disease

I have been to Malaysia a couple of times, it is not friendly for people with special diets to dine out. I am gluten and lactose intolerant. However, there are gluten and lactose free items available at leading supermarket like Jusco and you can also get gluten and lactose free items at organic or specialty stores.
It is not advisable to eat out because the restaurants or eateries are not trained and are not aware of such needs. Therefore, there are high chances of cross-containmination.
Another note is that you can get gluten free soy sauce at Jusco for RM29.90 (big bottle) or RM14.70 (small bottle). They have gluten free miso paste as well. Gluten free cereal can be bought at Jusco too.
