52. Crete Aradena Gorge 2016:04:08

The Aradena gorge is spectacular and can be walked as a loop- as long as it is not too hot. We parked up beside the bridge and walked the path via the road and path through Livaniana to come back up through the gorge. It would also be possible to park where the path leaves the road at the bottom and do the loop from there.

This is a path promoted by the tourist authority but not well maintained.

A new and broad highway leads up to a few largely ruined villages

The old cobble track into the gorge from both sides, just up the gorge from the bridge, and the route out of the gorge

...

Start by following the road to Livaniana, and then keep an eye open for the path that cuts the corners.

...

...

Head down the path to Livaniana

...

...

The path is quite rough in places

The beach. Quite a rough sea today

...

...

Now head up the floor of the gorge.

...

...

Sometimes the path is steep and rough

A side oath to Livaniana -keep to the main gorge

...

Sometimes you have to look for the easiest way round the boulders

...

You do need a head for heights here. This large iron ladder is the way up.

...

The ladder is followed by large boulders and some loose scree

...

There is an alternative path past the ladders

...

...

...

Go under the road bridge and then take one of the cobbled paths that zig zag out of the gorge. We took the western one.

...

On the drive back from the Aradena we stopped to have a look at the old fort at Frangokostello
