Local bus services are inexpensive and efficient but are geared to local life and do not always meet the needs of the walker.

Buses from Rethimnon to Spili and Agia Galini leave at 06.45, 10.30, 12.45, 14.15 and return from Agia Galini 07.00, 12.00, 14.30, 16.00. Only three buses run at weekends, at 08.00, 12.00 and 16.00.

Buses from Rethimnon to Plakias leave at 06.00 and 14.15.

From Plakias to Rethimnon at 06.50 and 15.00.

Buses usually run from the larger villages to the nearest large town early in the morning, often setting out at 07.00 and returning at the end of the morning, between 12.00 and 14.00. Services are more frequent in the summer months between May and September but unless the route is popular with tourists it is wise to assume that the buses will only run in the morning. It is best to get the 07.00 bus in the morning to the start of a walk and then walk back to base.

Taxis can be a cheap and convenient way for a group of people to reach the starting point of a walk but they may charge a higher rate to take you to a location where they cannot get a return fare. Most taxis seem to travel at high speed even on mountain tracks but I have always found that they will drive more slowly when asked. Try saying: 'siga, siga parakalo' if you want them to drive more slowly.
