Crete offers wild mountains, spring flowers and the scent of herbs in the air.
Sadly it has failed to develop and maintain its ancient paths and in some areas access is far more restricted than it used to be.
In the Plakias region ferocious dogs are a menace, and although it could be a fabulous destination for walking holidays it is in slow decline and many tour operators have abandoned it. Such a shame.
I wish the people of Crete would look at how the path network is developed and maintained right across the Alps, and see how they too could develop the potential of their mountainous and historic landscape. The older generation are still as welcoming as ever.
