In the middle of village of Gunnerside take path up east bank of stream
Look out for a sharp right turn just before a private garden. Continue up stream side through Birbeck Wood.

At this point the path is well above the valley floor
Continue upstream at the crossroads - don't drop down here. Looking across at Blind Gill

The path up from here is well worn, and comes out on a track just above the lead mines
Follow the track west (don't take the north branch). As the track starts to drop down into east Grain keep a sharp look out for the path that leaves the track here to follow the north side of the valley down. We followed the good path down past Crackpot Hall

the other paths are narrower and can be slippery when wet
Here we continued on the track northwest to the bridge below Keld. Don't turn down by the riverside, continue up a steep hill before turning left at the signposts.
